The Problem
Dentistry in the United States is both a profession and a business.
Like any business, dental practices are shaped by financial, operational, and growth decisions. These can include how offices are staffed, how many patients are scheduled, and how care is delivered day to day.
In today's landscape, ownership structures can range from a single dentist to larger organizations managing multiple locations. These structures often influence how practices operate, but they are not always visible to patients.

Ownership Classification
Each dental office is assigned one of four classifications:
Independent Private Practice
A single location, fully owned and controlled by the licensed dentist(s) who practice there, with no identified DSO or external management affiliation.
Multi-Location Private Group Practice
Two or more locations under common dentist ownership and control, with no external management affiliation. A back-office entity the same owner dentists control does not change the classification.
Corporate-affiliated
An external organization, such as a Dental Support Organization (DSO), DPO, MSO, private equity group, or other outside management company, holds management or ownership of the practice. A practice carries this classification even if a dentist holds ownership or the brand describes itself as dentist-owned.
Unverified
Ownership information has not yet been confirmed. The profile may be pending review or lack sufficient public data for classification.
Privately owned is not the same as independent. A licensed dentist can own a practice on paper while a Dental Support Organization (DSO) or corporate group runs the business. We classify by management affiliation, not ownership title.
Classifications are based on available public information and reviewed submissions, and are not legal ownership determinations. They may be updated as new data or corrections become available.
